Profile overview
Mayuri believes ignorance is a temporary defect that experimentation can remove. His curiosity is real, but it is inseparable from control: a discovery satisfies him most when it proves another mind predictable. The theatrical makeup and contemptuous speech turn every encounter into a demonstration in which he expects to be the only qualified observer.
The story rarely asks viewers to mistake usefulness for goodness. Mayuri saves Soul Society because its survival gives his research a world in which to continue, not because cruelty has disappeared. Mayuri Kurotsuchi is the captain of Squad 12 and head of the Department of Research and Development, succeeding Kisuke Urahara.
