Profile overview
Miyako appears through memory, but she is not important only because she dies. Her treatment of Rukia gives the isolated young officer a practical model of adulthood: strength can be gentle, rank does not require distance and care can be expressed without turning another person into an object of pity.
Her death begins a chain of consequences that the story later revisits through Rukia's guilt and Aaroniero Arruruerie's stolen appearance. The emotional force depends on the life established before the loss. Miyako was a leader trusted with a patrol and a person whose absence changes everyone around her.
Miyako Shiba was a 3rd Seat of Squad 13 and the wife of Lieutenant Kaien Shiba. Rukia Kuchiki admired her as an officer who combined competence, composure and kindness without treating a Kuchiki noble differently from anyone else. Miyako led a patrol to investigate a Hollow that had killed Soul Reapers near a training ground. The Hollow Metastacia destroyed the team and killed her, prompting Kaien to pursue it. That pursuit ended with Metastacia taking Kaien's body and Rukia killing him to stop the attack.
