Profile overview
Ichibe's warmth and menace occupy the same smile. He welcomes Ichigo into the Royal Palace, supervises training and speaks with the ease of someone who predates most institutions below. When the palace is threatened, that familiarity becomes absolute authority over the language by which people understand themselves.
His motivation is preservation of the existing worlds, but protection does not make him conventionally benevolent. Ichibe thinks at the scale of cosmic structure and accepts decisions that can reduce an individual to a necessary component. The gap between friendly teacher and ancient custodian is central to his moral complexity.
Ichibe Hyosube is the apparent leader of Squad Zero, the Royal Guard charged with protecting the Soul King. An ancient Soul Reaper known as Manako Osho, he is credited with naming essential parts of Soul Society's world and wields Ichimonji, a brushlike Zanpakuto whose black ink governs names and the power attached to them.
