Profile overview
Fishbone D has no elaborate ideology, yet its attack changes the structure of the entire story. A household disturbance becomes proof that Ichigo's ability to see spirits also attracts danger. Protecting the family can no longer be separated from learning how the hidden world works.
The Hollow also exposes the unusual scale of Ichigo's potential. Rukia expects to lend enough strength for one emergency, but the transfer produces a Soul Reaper with an oversized blade and power beyond either character's prediction. Fishbone D is defeated quickly because the true revelation is the person swinging the sword.
Fishbone D is the Hollow that attacks Karakura Town on the night Ichigo Kurosaki meets Rukia Kuchiki. Drawn by Ichigo's unusually dense spiritual energy, it enters the Kurosaki home, injures Isshin and targets Karin and Yuzu. Rukia tries to handle the Hollow herself but is badly wounded while protecting Ichigo. With his family in immediate danger, Ichigo accepts her offer to transfer part of her Soul Reaper power. He unexpectedly absorbs nearly all of it, manifests an enormous Zanpakutō and destroys Fishbone D with his first strike as a Substitute Soul Reaper.
