Profile overview

Nnoitra cannot tolerate power he does not control. Every stronger opponent becomes an accusation, and every victory provides only temporary relief before another hierarchy appears. His claim to be the strongest is therefore not confidence; it is a fragile identity requiring constant violence to defend.

His hostility toward Nelliel exposes the contradiction. She defeats him without sharing his need to humiliate the weak, proving that strength can exist without his worldview. Rather than change, Nnoitra turns resentment into conspiracy and later insists their unfinished rivalry must end on his terms.

Nnoitra Gilga is the Quinto Espada, ranked fifth in Sosuke Aizen's Arrancar army. He once held the eighth rank and repeatedly challenged the then-Third Espada, Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck, before helping remove her from Las Noches. His pursuit of strength is less a path toward security than a demand to keep fighting until he dies against someone stronger.

Personality and motivation

  • Belligerent
  • Insecure beneath his arrogance
  • Cruel
  • Obsessed with dying in battle

Abilities, powers and limitations

Abilities

  • Possessing exceptionally dense Hierro that makes his skin one of the hardest defensive surfaces among the Espada
  • Wielding Santa Teresa as a large crescent-bladed weapon with enough reach and weight to dominate close combat
  • Releasing Santa Teresa to gain four additional arms, each capable of producing a separate scythe
  • Firing Cero from his tongue and using Pesquisa to assess spiritual pressure across Las Noches

Limits

  • Concentrated force from a sufficiently powerful opponent can cut through even Nnoitra's exceptional Hierro.
  • His Hollow hole passes through the area hidden by his eyepatch, leaving a deceptive opening rather than normal anatomy.
  • The need to reject mercy and keep escalating a fight prevents retreat even when survival would be the more rational choice.

Aliases

Quinto Espada, Espada No. 5

Role

Fifth Espada driven to prove that no opponent stands above him

Important relationships

  • Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck repeatedly defeats Nnoitra while rejecting his belief that battle exists to prove superiority over others.
  • Kenpachi Zaraki gives Nnoitra the unrestricted contest he desires, but their shared love of combat hides different attitudes toward defeat and enjoyment.
  • Ichigo Kurosaki becomes Nnoitra's exhausted target after the Grimmjow battle, demonstrating his preference for domination over a fair contest.

Defining moments

  • Striking an exhausted Grimmjow and Ichigo interrupts their completed rivalry with a fighter who cares more about control than mutual recognition.
  • Revealing his history with Nelliel shows that his current rank was built partly through resentment and betrayal rather than victory alone.
  • Releasing Santa Teresa against Kenpachi turns the wish to be strongest into the more honest wish to fall while still fighting.

Symbolism and visual design

The crescent horns of his mask and the moon-shaped blades of Santa Teresa frame violence as a cycle that never produces satisfaction.

An eyepatch covers emptiness rather than an injured eye, matching the bravado used to conceal insecurity.

The number five records advancement from his former rank but cannot settle the question of strength that consumes him.

Manga-versus-anime differences

The manga connects Nnoitra's attack on Ichigo, his history with Nelliel and his battle with Kenpachi across volumes 33 through 35. The official VIZ guides frame this section as a succession of increasingly dangerous Hueco Mundo opponents.

The anime extends the physical rhythm of Santa Teresa's multiple arms and Kenpachi's responses while retaining the manga's core outcome. Official TV Tokyo guides identify Nnoitra's rank, solitary aggression and final battle; Nobutoshi Canna voices him in Japanese, with the result reserved for spoiler-marked coverage.

Ending and current status

The main profile avoids end-of-series outcomes and late identity or relationship reveals.

Ending and current-status coverage will only appear inside a dedicated, clearly labelled spoiler section.
