Profile overview
Denji's dreams begin with food, shelter and intimacy because those things have never been secure. The story does not ask readers to laugh only at the smallness of his ambitions; it asks what kind of person has the luxury to imagine more.
Once basic needs become available, desire does not automatically produce fulfilment. Denji must learn the difference between wanting an experience, wanting recognition and wanting a reciprocal relationship.
Denji is a teenager shaped by debt and deprivation whose apparently simple desires reveal how thoroughly poverty has limited his idea of a normal life.

Symbolism and visual design
The transformation turns a tool of labour into a violent body, linking work, consumption and self-use.
Bread, jam and ordinary rooms repeatedly carry more emotional meaning than luxury spectacle.
Manga-versus-anime differences
The anime's cinematic pacing gives awkward silences and mundane routines unusual weight.
Sound design makes transformation physically abrasive while quiet scenes preserve Denji's emotional uncertainty.
