Anna's story makes the Dragon Slayers' missing childhood part of a deliberate resistance plan rather than five unrelated disappearances. She accepts responsibility for bringing children into a future war, then spends the displaced years trying to recover the guidance the damaged passage prevented her from giving.
Her strength is preparation across generations. Anna does not defeat Acnologia in direct combat; she connects dragons, Celestial Spirit magic, Eclipse, Layla's sacrifice, modern technology and the knowledge of a temporal rift into a plan others can execute.
Anna Heartfilia is a Celestial Spirit mage from four hundred years before the main story and an ancestor of Lucy and Layla Heartfilia. Working with the dragons who oppose Acnologia, she helps create the Eclipse plan: Natsu, Gajeel, Wendy, Sting and Rogue are sent through the gate with their dragon guardians sealed inside them, allowing the children to reach an era with denser magic. Layla opens the gate from the future in X777, but instability in the passage separates Anna from the children she intended to guide. After arriving in the modern era, Anna searches for them and studies the space between time, a destructive temporal rift she believes can imprison Acnologia. During the final conflict she joins Ichiya and the others aboard Christina, explains the ancient plan, and attempts to lure the Black Dragon into the rift.
